Cape Breton Camping 101

July 1st weekend is often considered the kickstart to camping season in Cape Breton. While there are certainly some hardcore adventurists that camp year round or very early in the season, the majority of Capers camp during July and August. Every day in store, we meet people who are seasoned campers and others who are dipping their toe into the experience for the first time. And, if you've never camped before, or cooked an outdoor meal in the backcountry, there can be a bit of a learning curve to the equipment and how it works.

To help out, (and with the help of AI) we've collated this list of some essentials and extras to help elevate the camping experience.

A basic camping trip requires essentials for shelter, sleeping, cooking, navigation, and personal care to ensure safety and comfort. Escape Outdoors has pretty much everything you need and we've noted the brands we have in stock. Have a look here to see most of our camping gear, but a visit in store will allow you to seen our entire inventory.

Shelter and Sleeping

• Tent with stakes and footprint for ground protection (Hotcore and North Face)

• Sleeping bag rated for expected temperatures (Hotcore and North Face)

• Sleeping pad or air mattress for insulation and comfort (Thermarest)

• Camp pillow or compressible pillow

• Tarp or groundsheet for extra protection from moisture (Hotcore and North Face)

Cooking and Food

• Portable stove or campfire equipment (MSR and Primus)

• Fuel (Primus fuel canisters in two sizes)

• Cookware: pots, pans, and utensils (GSI and MSR)

• Eating supplies: plates, bowls, cups, and cutlery (GSI and MSR)

• Cooler for perishable food (Yeti)

• Food and snacks appropriate for the trip duration (Happy Yak and Nomad Nutrition)

Clothing and Personal Items

• Weather-appropriate clothing: layers for warmth, rain gear, and sun protection (Patagonia Torrentshell, rain poncho, Hotcore sleeping bag liner)

Navigation and Safety

• Map and compass or GPS device (Brunton compass)

• Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries (Petzl headlamps)

• First aid kit with basic medical supplies (Adventure Medical Kits)

• Multi-tool or knife (in stock)

• Emergency whistle (in stock)

Optional Comfort and Extras

• Camp chairs and table for seating

• Lantern for ambient light (Uco candle lantern)

Building your gear kit will take some time, but we recommend getting by with items or substituting so that you can make the investment in gear made to last! Remember the mantra, buy once and last long! Once you know you enjoy the sport, then you can commit to high quality purchases.
