We host a free community group walk most Mondays where people of all ages and fitness levels can get moving, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with others. The group meets at 9:30 a.m. every Monday at Escape Outdoors in North Sydney where we enjoy a 5km walk at a comfortable pace.
The walk is led by EO staff and Hike Nova Scotia Walk Leaders Catherine Morrison and Alexandra Young. Our goal in creating this walking group is to encourage people to get outside, stay active, and enjoy the many benefits of walking. We also hope the group provides an opportunity for people to connect with others, build new friendships, and move their bodies in a fun and welcoming environment.

Every Monday, we see a mix of familiar faces and new ones. Some people join us every week, while others stop by whenever they can fit it into their schedule. There's no pressure to commit. If you can’t make it, we’ll see you another Monday, but if you can, we'd love to have you.
Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay active and improve your health in many ways. According to the Government of Canada, regular physical activity can help improve your mood, reduce stress, increase energy, improve sleep, and lower the risk of over 25 chronic diseases. Adults are encouraged to aim for at least 2.5 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week, and a weekly group walk is a great way to work toward that goal.
Another benefit of walking in a group is the social aspect. Walking groups help build relationships, encourage conversation, and create a sense of community. This is especially beneficial for those looking to connect with others who share a similar goal of staying active. The group also provides accountability and motivation to start your week with movement, while the support of fellow walkers can offer encouragement to keep going. Walking with others can also add purpose and structure to your day, making it a fun and enjoyable way to stay active.
Over the past few weeks, we've loved seeing conversations continue after the walk ends. Most weeks, we offer light refreshments back at Escape Outdoors, giving participants a chance to relax, chat, and continue connecting with one another after the walk.
You don't need to be an experienced walker or worry about keeping up. We walk at a comfortable pace, and everyone is welcome. Whether you're looking to get a little more active, meet new people, or simply enjoy some fresh air on a Monday morning, we'd love for you to join us.
